Wildest dreams - working towards ideals and imagined goals

.

AGE: Primary

THEME: Wildest Dreams - what are we aiming for?

PREPARATION:
Write this statement on a large piece of paper and display it where all can see:
"... the bedroom of your dreams fitted free...!"

INTRODUCTION:
  1. Talk about the statement and what it means. Is it accurate? Is it realistic? What might a 'bedroom of someone's dreams' be like? Get the pupils to give some ideas as to what would make their ideal bedroom and why. Are everyone's ideas/ideals the same?

  2. Think about the statement: "...of your dreams". On a large sheet of paper brainstorm words or phrases which explore this idea more closely. These might include such concepts as: perfection, favourite, unusual, exciting, imaginative, extra-ordinary, ultimate, having every need and desire fulfilled, for example.

  3. What are the limitations on achieving the "...whatever... of our dreams" if it means that it is equal to some of the ideas in no. 2 above. Can we achieve perfection? Our ultimate desires?

DEVELOPMENT:
Consider the phrase people often use - " in your wildest dreams". Does it sound as if we are defeated before we begin? Are our expectations too high?

Share the thought that it may be one thing to dream of things we want, but what about our dreams of what we want to be? Must they be limited? Can we always achieve what we set out to do? How important is it to try no matter how 'wild' our expectations are?

Get the pupils to offer ideas or write on a post-it note what their 'wildest dreams (hopes and expectations)' are, especially concerning what they would like to be in 5, 10, 15 years etc. time.

REFLECTION:
Think about what you hope to be, what kind of person you want to be, what job you would like to do, how you would like others to think of and treat you.

Think in particular of what you have written as your 'wildest dream' and consider how far will you be able to achieve it.

READING:
God uses dreams as a special way of 'speaking' to us.
For example this is a dream of Jacob: Genesis 28: 10-16.

PRAYER:
Dear God
We are all your special people,
You have given us gifts and skills to share.
Help us to realise what you want us to be
Show us how to fulfil your dreams and hopes for us,
So that our hopes and dreams bring us closer to you
Amen.

FOLLOW UP WORK:
  1. Find out about famous people who followed their hopes and dreams... pioneers, explorers, scientists, reformers and many more.

  2. Create a timeline which plots out how you think you might achieve your goal/goals. It could show where you are now, where you hope to be in 10 years and the steps along the way as to how you will achieve them.

  3. Design a 'wildest dreams' for the world poster... for world peace, for a safe and protected environment, for justice etc..
