Discovery - Searching for God

.

AGE: Infants and Juniors

THEME: Discovery - Searching for God

PREPARATION:
Write the word DISCOVERY vertically on a large piece of paper and display it where all can see.

INTRODUCTION:
  1. Talk about the word 'discover' and what it means.
  2. Using a large sheet of paper, brainstorm words or phrases which explore this idea more closely. These might include words such as, for example: 'finding out', 'questions', 'asking', 'exciting', 'something new to be found by exploration'.
  3. Think about what sort of 'things' people have discovered... in history, medicine, nature, places etc.. Lead on to archaeological finds, hidden civilisations and maybe even treasure.

DEVELOPMENT:
Introduce the idea that God is a treasure waiting to be discovered and that he can be found in very many ways and places if we use the right 'tools'.

What are these tools? Fill in the words on the vertical DISCOVERY. Leave the 'Y' until you have discussed the ways of finding out listed by the other letters:

Detective
Investigate
Search
Check
Observe
View
Enquire
Read
Y

REFLECTION:
Where can God be found using these 'tools'? How can he be 'discovered'? We can find God and know him by asking questions, reading the Bible, talking to people about him, searching for him in the natural and beautiful world we live in. He is all around us if we look and let him show us how great he is.

All of the words listed are useful in our search to discover God, but the most important is still empty... the 'Y'. (Add the word 'YOURSELF'). Most important in our search for God is the delight of discovering him for ourselves and finding out how much he loves us.

PRAYER:
Dear God
Help us in our search to find you.
Show us where to look, tell us which questions to ask
So that we can discover your greatness and share in your love.
Amen.

FOLLOW-UP IDEAS:
  • Find out about famous people who made great discoveries: pioneers, explorers, scientists, doctors and many more.
  • Find some stories or passages in the Bible which tell you about God
  • Ask people to visit school to talk about what they have discovered, know, feel about God, e.g. the local priest, someone from a church or church organisation, a representative from a Christian-based charity such as Christian Aid.
  • Think of other acrostics for phrases such as 'finding out' or try a really tricky one, such as 'revelation', and explore what the ideas and concepts are.
