Rich and famous?
AGE: Primary |
THEME: Rich and Famous? |
AIM: |
| To provide opportunities for thinking about what makes people famous and how what people do is often more important than who they are. | ||||||
PREPARATION: |
You will need:
INTRODUCTION: |
| Ask the children if they can name a famous person who is living today. It is likely that most suggestions will offer the name of celebrities, e.g. football players, pop stars, etc.. Establish why each of these people is famous - they often have special gifts or talents. Ask the children whether they think most of the famous people mentioned are rich or poor. The majority will be rich. |
DEVELOPMENT: |
Tell the children that you are going to read them a story about someone who lived a long time age. The story is from the Bible. This person is famous because although she died a long time ago we can still read about her today. Read the story of the Widow and the Two Coins. After reading, ask the children if they can tell you the name of the famous person in the story - establish that we don't know her name. Ask the children if the person in the story was rich or poor. Establish the idea that although most of the people they mentioned at the beginning are both rich and famous, some of the world's most famous people have not been rich at all. Like the woman in the story, they are famous for what they do and not for how much money they have. At this stage, children may be encouraged to suggest other people in this category, e.g. Mother Teresa. Perhaps the children would like to be famous one day? Perhaps they have a special gift for sport or music? Perhaps they want to be famous so that they can have a lot of money? Remind them of the woman in the story; Jesus said she had the greatest gift of all, and yet we don't even know her name. Sing 'The Best Gift'. |
PRAYER AND REFLECTION: |
Ask the children to sit quietly and think about the story they have heard. Think about any special gifts they might have and how they could use their gifts to help others. After a short period of silence, the leader should say, 'Listen again to the end of the story.' Read: 'The rich people gave God what they could easily afford. It didn't cost them anything... they still had plenty left for themselves. The widow gave all that she had. She kept nothing back for herself. That's what God calls the biggest gift of all.' |
