Overcoming difficulties

.

AGE: Primary

THEME: Overcoming Difficulties

AIM:
To provide opportunities for thinking about the difficulties children might face and how to deal with them.

PREPARATION:
You will need:
  • An old copy of the Yellow Pages.

INTRODUCTION:
Hold up a copy of the Yellow Pages. Tell the children that you have experienced a problem - you want to tear the book in half but you can't. Demonstrate this and suggest that perhaps you aren't strong enough.

DEVELOPMENT:
Invite volunteers - particularly children who think they will be strong enough to perform the task. Each child will find it impossible to tear the Yellow Pages in half. Explain to everyone that sometimes we need to think of other ways around problems or difficulties.

Can anyone think of another way to tear the Yellow Pages in half? If no-one solves the problem, demonstrate that the directory can be torn by tearing one page at a time.

Explore the idea that often problems seem very big and that there seems no way round them. However, if we think about taking small steps, sometimes we can make progress, e.g. for some children learning to swim seems as difficult as tearing the Yellow Pages in half, but when you take small steps - using a float, wearing armbands, etc. - we gradually learn to overcome the difficulty step by step.

PRAYER AND REFLECTION:
In a moment of silence, ask the children to think about something that they are finding difficult. After a short time, say the following:

Loving God,
When we find things difficult, help us to keep going.
Thank you for all the people who help us take small steps to overcome our problems.
Amen.

After another short pause, finish with the hymn.

HYMN / SONG:
'One More Step' No.47 in Come and Praise 1, BBC.
