Collective Worship Resource

Sudan: A sadly never ending story

.

PREPARATION
  • Gather a selection of images from Sudan available from a variety of websites e.g. news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/africa/2004/sudan/
  • Create a Powerpoint presentation or display the images on a large notice board for all to see.
  • Paint (or print) a large Sudanese flag.
  • Cut out hand shapes in paper for all participating (this could be done as a class activity before worship with preparation discussion on 'helping hands'... In what ways do we help each other? our neighbours? the community? the world?
INTRODUCTION
  1. Use a globe or a map to locate Sudan.
  2. Ask pupils to state what they know already about the Sudan - and display answers on a flip-chart or whiteboard.
  3. Explain that despite the Peace Plan of 2006, Sudan, and in particular Darfur, is once again under threat of war and the suffering of her people.
DEVELOPMENT

Show the images and/or Powerpoint presentation:
  • Discuss the idea of peace... what is it? Is it just 'an end to fighting' or is it something more?
  • What would it mean for the people of Sudan?
  • How could peace be achieved?
Ask the pupils to write their thoughts on the hand shapes.
These can be attached to the flag as a gesture of 'helping hands' whilst playing suitable reflective music.
Light a 'peace candle' as a prayer offering.

REFLECTION

Ask the pupils to think about the world and all its troubled regions.

Read the following verses from the Book of Hebrews:
Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.
Hebrews 12:14-15
Explain that all religions encourage their followers to live in peace. So why do so many people cause suffering and destruction?

Many people have no religion and yet would strive to live in peace and harmony.
For Christians peace is a vital 'pathway' to God through the teachings of Jesus... what might Jesus say about peace?

PRAYER

Father of all, before the Throne of Grace we remember the people of the Sudan
Give us the heart to feel for those who wander the world seeking a home to call their own.
Give us the mind to strengthen those who feed the hungry, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger.
Give us the spirit to pray for those who walk in the valley of the shadow of death.
May all the nations obey you, all the peoples love you and the whole earth rejoice in you,
Father, Son and Spirit
Amen
