The HaTe Virus - The end of Anti-Bullying Week

BACKGROUND
At the end of Anti-Bullying Week what changes have happened in our schools or workplaces or our families? We still have bullies, which is why this has to be an annual event. However, is education enough? Something goes deeper than our human behaviour and so just learning about it is not enough for most people.
This resource, for the end of Anti-Bullying Week, is an attempt to look beyond human behaviour and go to the root, a hatred that can grow in our heart that we can pass on to other people.

PREPARATION / USING THE RESOURCE
The simplest way is to choose three of your best readers and let them read out the following script. With a little more time to prepare, these readers could make it a much more dramatic presentation. Also you may like to use the Powerpoint presentation provided that illustrates the main points of the drama with words and a few images.
The drama concludes with a challenge and a prayer. You may want to take a few more minutes for class discussion, and / or reflection, on the issues it raises.

PRESENTATION

The HaTe Virus Drama (show Powerpoint Slide 1)

NEWS ANCHOR in studio:  This is Channel Seven News, bringing you the latest news from around the country.
(show Powerpoint Slide 2)
Our top story looks at the failure of Anti-Bullying Week. Every year we have this special week to stamp out bullying in our schools, homes and businesses and yet the problem of bullying does not go away. Today Channel Seven has been given exclusive access to a report from one of the leading research laboratories in the UK. The report reveals that scientists have discovered a new deadly virus. We are now going across, live, to a secret location outside the laboratory where our reporter, (name) has the latest for us.

REPORTER outside lab:  Thank you (name). I've only just seen the report but the findings are quite terrifying.
(show Powerpoint Slides 3-5)
The Virus which has been given the name, (spell out the letters rather than say the word) HaTe, is incredibly infectious not just for old people but for young healthy people as well. Scientists have discovered that you can be a carrier of this virus but not realise it.

NEWS ANCHOR in studio:  This is really going to worry people. Are there any symptoms?

REPORTER outside lab:  (show Powerpoint Slide 6)
Yes. If you are a carrier of this virus it can make you act and talk aggressively, even if you think you are just joking around.
(show Powerpoint Slide 7)
But it gets worse, it is so infectious, even if you have any contact at all with the virus it can make you unable to say or do anything to help someone in trouble.
(show Powerpoint Slide 8)
However, by far the worst situation are those who are deliberately infected with the HaTe virus. Those infected can become extremely distressed and in the worst cases... die!
To explain more, I have one of the top scientists with me. Professor Matthews, what more can you tell us about this terrible virus?

PROFESSOR outside lab:  For years we have been baffled why teaching about bullying hasn't been enough to stop bullies of any age. This virus explains a great deal, and it really is as infectious as you have just reported.

REPORTER outside lab:  Is there a cure, professor?

PROFESSOR outside lab:  (show Powerpoint Slides 9-10)
Some viruses the body can fight itself, and amazingly, although this one is so deadly, everyone has the cure within themselves! If they just follow a simple instruction antibodies are released into the blood stream and the HaTe virus is destroyed!

REPORTER outside lab:  Please tell us so that our listeners can immediately protect themselves...

PROFESSOR outside lab:  We've run this experiment again and again, even on those most infected and it really does work. So here are the instructions. I will explain each word, just so that your listeners are in no doubt as to what they should do:
(show Powerpoint Slide 11)
"LOVE" not in the romantic sense we so often hear but love is the very opposite of HATE. Hate is wanting the worst for some one, so love is wanting the best for someone.
(show Powerpoint Slide 12)
"YOUR NEIGHBOUR" this is quite simply the person who is next to you, which could be a friend, a stranger or even someone you don't like.
(show Powerpoint Slide 13)
"AS YOURSELF" we should love others as much as we should love ourselves. We should be wanting the very best for ourselves too.

REPORTER outside lab:  Sorry, we are out of time, this is (name) for Channel Seven News with the cure for the HaTe virus.

NEWS ANCHOR in studio:  Thank you (name) for that exclusive report. It is clear why bullying continues if that HaTe virus is so infectious, but with those simple instructions we could all get rid of it. So we need to "Love our neighbour as ourselves". I think I can summarise that by saying:
Wanting the very best for the person next to you, just as you want the very best for your self.

(all three actors turn to face the wall, pause and then one at a time turn back to face the group to say)

NEWS ANCHOR in studio:  If you are a bully, that HaTe virus has really got hold of you. What is the very best for the person you are picking on? Stop bullying and do that instead!

REPORTER outside lab:  If you are being bullied, you have been infected with the HaTe virus too. What is the very best for the person who is bullying you? To let them carry on bullying other people for their whole life, or telling a teacher or a parent who can help them to stop? Stop being bullied and do that instead!

PROFESSOR outside lab:  If you are neither a bully or being bullied you could still be infected with the HaTe virus if you do nothing, or say nothing, when you see it happen. What is the best for that bully and that person who is being bullied. Stop doing nothing and do the best for both of them!

ALL:  Stop hating and instead, Love your neighbour as yourself!

PRAYER

Dear God,
We are so sorry that we have not done something sooner. We are so sorry for the people we have hurt and passed on that hate. Please give us the strength to want the very best for ourselves and the courage to want the very best for the person next to us.
Amen.
