TITLE Light in Christian belief and practice
AIM
· To enable pupils to explore their experiences of light and darkness in everyday life
· To help pupils to begin to understand the symbolism of light within the Christian tradition
RESOURCES
You will need:
Session 1 Birthdays
· A large circular cloth to spread on the floor
· A birthday cake with several candles
· Party poppers, several children’s birthday cards, several small boxes wrapped as gifts
· Matches
· A CD with music representative of the theme of light/darkness e.g. Zanfir (Pan Pipes: Light of Experience)
Session 2 Candlemas
· A large circular cloth spread on the floor
· A collection of candles representative of Christian ceremonies and celebrations, displayed attractively on the circular cloth e.g. baptism candle, miniature Paschal candle, votive candles
· A room that can be darkened
· A copy of the poem ‘Candles’
· A CD with music representative of the theme of light/darkness e.g. Zanfir (Pan Pipes: Light of Experience)
· Reading of Jesus being presented in the temple: Luke 2:22-38
Session 3 Easter
· A large circular cloth to spread on the floor
· A miniature paschal candle
· Easter eggs, Easter cards, a selection of different kinds of crosses including palm crosses
· Children’s drawings of large paschal candles, depicting the traditional symbols (see below)
Session 4 Baptism
· A large circular cloth to spread on the floor
· Greetings cards for baptism
· A baptismal candle
· Readings for baptism John 3: 5-6; Matt 28:19; Gal 3:26-27
· A christening robe
· A flipchart with a picture of a font in the centre surrounded by the following questions: What is baptism? Why is baptism a time to celebrate? What changes on this day? Why is the symbol of light important?
· 3 pieces of A4 card with the following words:
Special clothes
A special place
A special name
