Collective Worship Resource

Advent - a presentation

.

New worship resources

Aware that many schools now use data / video projectors we are pleased to offer this resource - the first of a new, extra, series which we will be producing in the coming year on the major Christian festivals and a range of popular themes / subjects.

Advent

This resource can be used as a whole or in two parts.
If you use it in two parts we suggest you make the break between the slides 'and Jesus will come again...' and 'four thoughts for Advent'.

Advent Presentation Resource >>
(version with fixed timing - Macromedia Flash format - 441Kbytes)

Advent Presentation Resource >>
(version with pauses - Macromedia Flash format - 442Kbytes)

Both presentations use the free Macromedia Flash player, which you can download here if you do not already have it installed.

Useful tip: your browser will probably allow you to press F11 to make use of the full screen. Press F11 again to return back to normal. Try it!

If the PC you're using for the presentation does not have Internet access, you will need to save the .swf file and copy it. To save a presentation, choose either the timed or paused version and right-click on your mouse (left-click for left-handed mouse), then select the 'Save Target As/Save Link As' option from the pop-up menu.

Notes on accompanying the presentation...

Introduction:

Advent is about preparation -
it's preparing ourselves to remember what Christmas is really about:
the birth of Jesus and the world's need for him;
it's also recognising that in Advent we can recall God's plan for the world at work through the ages.

Slides 1-9 focus on this first point - illustrating examples of what is wrong in the world through images of darkness and showing that the birth of Jesus is more than a traditional nativity scene, it's about Jesus being born to bring the world back to God.
Slides 10-22 use the traditional symbol of the advent ring with its five candles illustrating the role of leadership, the importance - and price - of prophecy, the continuing work of preparing us to live as God would have us do; the place of Mary, chosen to play her part, and finally the image of Jesus shining as a light.

Approach:

The order of the sections of worship is for you to decide - a brief time of reflection might be most effective at the end of worship.

Music:
We have not provided music leaving you to choose your own and to play with the presentation as you wish.
It will probably help to have some music playing quietly at the start of worship, then to use music with the presentation and again at the end of the worship time.
If there are pupils/students who could play for you rather than using recorded music it could add an important quality to the occasion.

Readings:
The time you have for worship and the age range of your school will guide what you do in respect of readings and time for prayer and reflection.
For older students you might think about:
John 1.1-5;
John 3.16-21
Jeremiah 33.14-16
Isaiah 51.4-8
For younger pupils a suitable version of Isaiah 42.1-6 might be appropriate.

Prayers / Reflection:
If you can get help it would be good to make use of pupils and students using their own prayers or thoughts for reflection based on the Advent themes. (If you do, we would like to have some e-mailed to us at cowo@culhaminstitute.org.uk - so that we can add them to this resource.)

or:

Father God, Advent is a time for us to think about Christmas. It's a time for getting ready and an exciting time too.
In the busy times and in the excitement help us to learn more about why Jesus was born all those years ago, what it means for us today and what you want us to do...
In His name
Amen
In a time of quiet think about:
The staircases / stairways we'll use today...
Going up and going down to where we want and need to be.

Advent is a time we can think about as a stairway between heaven and earth...
Jesus coming to earth - this world,
To the dark places where we fail - ignoring neighbours who need us, sometimes being unkind in what we say and do;
To the dark places where there are problems - of cruelty and abuse, of war instead of peace, of hunger when there is plenty to share
To the dark places of need - where we can show love

And let us learn how to climb the stairway between earth and heaven
and do something... to be for Jesus... the light of the world.
