Preparation
|
You will need:
- A set of balance scales, two sets of equal size blocks each with a Post-It note.
- A children's Bible for the references to Matthew 25:31-46 (the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats) and Matthew 6:25-34 (Jesus tells us that we should not be anxious because he cares for us).
N.B. The subject matter of these materials is sensitive and some children may have been directly affected by specific examples used. Encourage thoughtful reflection, maybe by the use of a candle for a visual focus and some quiet background music at times of reflection.

Throughout the Reflections
|
At any point, and particularly with older children, a PowerPoint presentation may be beneficial in providing images for reflection. Pictures illustrating recent global disasters that children will be familiar with can be found on the internet by searching for images relating to Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, London bombings, famine. Text to accompany each image could convey messages such as:
- (intro) Finding the right balance. Helping others and enjoying ourselves.
- The tsunami brought devastation to the Far East. Many are now working to rebuild their lives.
- There are millions of people in the world without enough food.
- Hurricane Katrina left many people in American without homes or businesses.
- Bombings not only kill and injure but can affect how people feel in the long term about their safety.
You could add a final slide, searching for images of children from around the world using the term 'happy children' to accompany the text:
- So how do we find the right balance? Helping others and enjoying ourselves.
The theme of this series of reflections links closely with RRR work. Visit www.unicef.org/crc/ to find out about the Rights of the Child. Another useful resource is the book For Every Child published in association with Unicef (ISBN 0-091-76815-2).
